Advising

If you have not yet been assigned an advisor, you will need to complete the Declaration of Major, Minor or Certificate Form (found here) and email it to Ms. Chang at scchang@umbc.edu.

Your first step as an English major is to visit the department to be assigned a faculty advisor who will oversee your progress through the program and help you with any questions or problems that may arise. You may, if you wish, request a particular faculty member to serve as your advisor.

If you are a transfer student, your advisor determines how courses you have taken elsewhere may be counted toward English major requirements. It is important that you keep in touch with your advisor and share the same understanding of your progress to determine if you have met the English requirements and are on track to graduate. For general advising questions, contact our Department Advisor, Michele Osherow.

If you have questions about the old English department curriculum, check the Archived Advising Materials or contact Selina Chang at scchang@umbc.edu.
