Monday, Feb. 3 at Noon: Virtual Info Session for "Tolkien & Lewis in Oxford" Study Abroad 2025


On Monday, February 3, you can join a virtual information session about a new offering for UMBC Study Abroad in Summer 2025, "Tolkien & Lewis in Oxford," taught by Professor Deborah Rudacille. The course will take place in Oxford, England from July 10-25, 2025. The final deadline for applications is February 15, 2025. All are invited to learn more about the course and how to apply! 



Course Description
ENGL347 (GEP AH): In this course we will explore the intellectual and experiential roots of the biophilia and technophobia in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and Lewis’ Space Trilogy. Reading these texts from an ecocritical perspective, discover how these works anticipate contemporary debate about the costs and benefits of technology.

Program Highlights
  • Guided tours of Oxford and Birmingham, birthplace of the Industrial Revolution
  • Visit Sarehole Mill, Tolkien’s childhood village and inspiration for The Shire, and The Kilns, Lewis’ home outside Oxford
  • Tickets to Oxford’s Science Museum, Botanical Garden, Museum of Natural History, Pitt Rivers Museum, and Bodleian Library
  • Live and study in University of Oxford residence halls and classrooms
