Fiction Student Wins MAWA Writing Contest
Teauna Harper Places 2nd in the Founders' Prize for Fiction
The English Department would like to offer its congratulations to Ms. Teauna Harper, an aspiring dentist and student in one of our Introduction Creative Writing--Fiction courses this semester. She recently received a second place award in the Middle-Atlantic Writers Association (MAWA) Creative Writing Contest for her first person point of view short story, "Constantine." Ms. Harper also attended the 27th annual MAWA conference on Friday, October 23, 2015, at Morgan State University where she read an excerpt of her work and received her award.
Long-time editor of the MAWA Review and Dean Emeritus at Morgan, Dr. Burney J. Hollis, praised Ms. Harper's work, indicating that award recipients would have their work published in an upcoming issue of the MAWA Review (volume 22, to be published in September 2016) as a reminder that we are in good hands with the next generation of creative writers. Congratulations again to Ms. Harper for your hard work and excellent short story. This work is truly a testament to what UMBC students can do and to the success of the English Department's creative writing classes.
