A New One-Act Play by Michele Osherow and Manil Suri

Description
Students, faculty, community, and friends are all invited to The Mathematics of Being Human, a new one-act play by Michele Osherow (English) and Manil Suri (Math). The play, directed by Alan Kreizenbeck, will be presented as a staged-reading in the Black Box Theatre, located in the Performing Arts & Humanities Building (PAHB) on November 4, 2014, at 7:30 PM. This reading will be followed by a talk-back.
Synopsis: "Battle lines are drawn when an English professor and mathematician are compelled to co-teach a course at a university bent on promoting interdisciplinarity. They tussle over everything: from the value of 'nothing' in King Lear, tot he fractals found in cauliflower. Will they be able to give the class a glimpse of synthesis or will their insularity prove impossible to surmount?"
The play is inspired by Osherow and Suri's experiences co-teaching a seminar for the Humanities Scholars Program. The two wrote about their teaching experiences in a brief series for The Chronicle of Higher Education. Come join us for this truly exciting and entertaining event, which is sponsored by the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, the Dresher Center for Humanities, and the Departments of English, Interdisciplinary Studies, Mathematics & Statistics, and Theatre.
